| Trigger points are hyper-irritable spots or zones that produce pain when stimulated by compression. The onset can be sudden or insidious. Trigger points are thought to be caused by mechanical stress, changes in temperature, or fatigue. Trigger points can appear as nodule or palpable bands of tense, hard, tissue. Thought commonly called points, trigger points are more likely to occur as zones than discrete points. Sometimes a large portion of a muscle or even the entire muscle responds as a single trigger point. Trigger points normally produce deep aching pain as opposed to superficial pain. When pressure stimulates trigger points, the patient may recoil or experience autonomic response. |
